Marquette is advancing a series of recommendations developed by its university-wide AI Task Force, marking the next phase of the institution’s mission-centered approach to artificial intelligence.
Convened during the 2025-26 academic year, the AI Task Force brought together more than 60 faculty and staff members from across the university to examine how artificial intelligence is affecting teaching and learning, clinical education, research, administrative operations, and wellness and student success. The group’s work included reviewing emerging trends, studying practices at peer institutions, gathering campus feedback, and developing recommendations rooted in Marquette’s Catholic, Jesuit mission. A campuswide survey that generated approximately 650 responses also informed the process.
The task force’s recommendations were presented to the Executive Leadership Team and are helping shape the university’s ongoing work to support responsible, mission-aligned use of AI.
Key priorities for the coming year
The task force organized its recommendations into three categories:
- Governance and guidance
- Institutional tools and investment
- Training and AI fluency
Recommended actions include developing an AI governance structure, updating relevant institutional policies, communicating shared guiding principles, expanding training opportunities and identifying priority projects that can inform future investments and decision-making.
Additional priorities include selecting and supporting institutionally approved AI tools, expanding access to guidance and training resources, and ensuring the university’s technological infrastructure can support emerging needs.
The recommendations are intended to help Marquette encourage innovation while maintaining appropriate safeguards around privacy, security, academic integrity, ethical decision-making and student well-being.
Explore Marquette’s AI resource website
Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to visit Marquette’s centralized AI resource website, which serves as the university’s primary hub for guidance, approved tools, training opportunities, policies, resources and best practices related to AI.
Developed through a cross-campus collaboration, the site includes dedicated resources for faculty, staff and students. The website also features a “What’s New” section highlighting the latest AI-related news, resources, events and opportunities from across the university.
Community invited to yearlong AI discernment series
Among the featured initiatives rooted in the AI Task Force’s findings is “What Are We Building? A Year-long Communal Discernment Exercise about AI,” a university-wide series taking place throughout the 2026-27 academic year. Inspired by Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, the initiative recognizes Catholic universities as important places for the moral and spiritual discernment needed in an age increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.
The series will bring together events hosted by units across the university and invite the Marquette community to engage with five key questions inspired by the encyclical. Together, those questions provide a shared framework for considering not only what society is building through AI, but also why, how and for whom those technologies are being developed.
More information about the university’s artificial intelligence resources, training opportunities and upcoming events is available on the AI at Marquette website.
