Twenty-five years after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Marquette University is inviting students, faculty and staff to mark the anniversary through service.
The Arrupe Center for Community Service and Social Responsibility will host a series of events this fall in observance of the Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, the day of service Congress established in 2009 to honor those who were lost and those who rose in service. Nearly all of today’s Marquette students were born after 2001. The programming offers them a way to join that response rather than only learn about it.
“Service is one way we can honor the people who, in the midst of tragedy, chose to care for others and build community,” said Dr. Carie Hertzberg, assistant vice president for belonging and student affairs. “Twenty-five years later, we can carry that spirit forward by asking how we can show up for one another and for our communities. I’m grateful to the Arrupe Center team for creating so many opportunities for Marquette to come together in service.”
There are a variety of ways for members of the Marquette community to participate:
- Treats & Heroes for 9/11 Day | Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Saturday, Sept. 12
- Join in commemorating the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11 by delivering baked goods to our local firefighters. Together, we’ll honor the heroes of 9/11, thank those who continue to serve, and show that even 25 years later, we will never forget. Register online.
- Connect & Serve for 9/11 Day | Saturday, Sept. 19
- Join for a day of fun and service to honor our first responders and remember 9/11 by volunteering with Children’s Wisconsin Rally Round. Rally Round is the next chapter of Al’s Run & Walk, bringing students together in service to children and families. Register online.
- American Red Cross blood drive | Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the AMU
- No registration is required to take part in one of the simplest ways to serve. Donating blood was among the first things Americans did in response to the attacks in 2001.
- Rooted in Service for 9/11 Day | Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon
- Rooted In Service provides Marquette students the opportunity to engage in environmental stewardship within the greater Milwaukee community. Register online.
Every event is open to students, faculty and staff, and no prior service experience is needed.
