Apple will release macOS 27 on Monday, Sept. 14. Apple has announced that macOS 27 is supported only on Apple Silicon (M-series) Macs and is not compatible with Intel-based Mac computers.
What you need to know:
- Marquette allows faculty and staff to defer major operating system upgrades for up to 90 days. This provides time for the university to evaluate compatibility with university applications, teaching tools, security software and other supported services.
- If you are using a supported Apple Silicon Mac, you may choose to install macOS 27 when it becomes available. Unless installed sooner, the update will automatically be applied after the 90-day deferral period expires.
Intel-based Macs:
- If you are using an Intel-based Mac, macOS 27 will not be offered because Apple has ended support for Intel hardware with this release. Your device will remain on its current supported version of macOS and continue to receive updates available for that operating system as provided by Apple.
- If you are unsure whether your Mac uses an Intel processor or Apple Silicon, select Apple Menu > About This Mac. The processor or chip type will be displayed.
Before you update
Before installing any major operating system upgrade, IT Services recommends that you:
- Save and back up important files.
- Verify that any specialized software required for your work is compatible with macOS 27.
- Ensure you know your Marquette credentials and multifactor authentication methods.
- Allow sufficient time for the installation to complete.
