Dr. Nakia Gordon, associate professor of psychology in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, and two Marquette Ph.D. students have had their research featured in an American Psychological Association (APA) Article Spotlight. APA Article Spotlights highlight timely, impactful and noteworthy research across the field of psychological science.
The spotlight, titled “A multimethod view of emotional sharing,” highlights the team’s study, “A multimethod approach to emotion assessment during emotional sharing in friend dyads,” published in Translational Issues in Psychological Science.
The research examined how friends share emotionally significant experiences and found that people discuss a wide range of meaningful events, with relatable experiences such as interpersonal conflict producing the strongest emotional responses. At the same time, the findings suggest that individuals can remain emotionally engaged during these conversations without becoming emotionally dysregulated.
The APA Article Spotlight recognizes the study’s contribution to understanding emotional sharing and friendship dynamics, underscoring the importance of close relationships in emotional processing and well-being.
