Dr. Voglewede answered some questions about his new book, including where the idea for the book came from, his favorite part of the writing process and how the book complements his teaching and research.
Where did the idea for this book come from?
The publisher inquired five years ago about my opinions on the book. I told them that it was a great book, one that I enjoyed as a student in Jerry Ginsberg’s class, and that I have been using as an instructor since coming to Marquette. However, I told them it needed to be updated to be consistent with modern engineering practice and align with robotics more. Cambridge University Press approached Jerry about it, and he said he would only update it if I helped him. I roped in Matt Allen, who is Jerry’s former PhD student and a professor at BYU, to help as well. We then worked over the last five years to completely revise it and align it to the way that I teach and with how engineering dynamics is done.
What was your favorite part of the writing/editing process?
I love the arguments that Jerry, Matt and I had about the best way to present the material. It made me much better at explaining how I see it and also understanding alternative approaches. It was a tremendous learning experience.

Is this your first book? What is your publishing history?
Yes. This is my first book. The first edition was only written by Jerry Ginsberg. The second edition is a collaboration between Jerry Ginsberg, Matt Allen and me.
What do you hope to accomplish with this book?
I hope to give engineers a more palatable way to understand 3D rigid body motion that is the cornerstone of engineering analysis of any rotating machinery. It will also aid my students to understand it easier, as it aligns with my other robotics class better.
How does this book advance or complement your research and/or teaching?
The book now follows my approach and coverage of dynamics. It makes my teaching more effective and efficient.
