In an age of rising healthcare costs, establishing a relationship with a primary care provider (PCP) can help manage medical expenses while supporting overall well-being. A PCP may be a physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant who practices in family medicine, general practice, internal medicine, pediatrics or geriatrics.
A PCP may serve as part of a larger primary care team, and provide the following medical services and support:
- Provide annual checkups and physical exams to ensure ongoing well-being
- Provide support when unexpected health issues arise
- Develop relationships that allow for better understanding of one’s health history, which can help with detection and diagnosing of illnesses
- Help manage chronic conditions including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and mental health conditions
- Refer to appropriate specialists for more specialized care
- Track and administer vaccinations
- Provide and recommend appropriate screenings
- Prescribe needed medications
Visits with a primary care provider can often be less costly than visiting an urgent care and significantly less costly than a visit to the emergency room. In-network preventive care in particular is covered at 100% by Marquette’s medical insurance plan.
Given the health benefits and potential cost savings associated with having a primary care provider, it is beneficial to identify a PCP before medical needs arise. Those on the Marquette medical plan can follow the instructions found on the medical insurance page to find in-network providers. Plan members may also call a UMR Plan Advisor at 800- 207-3172 for assistance.
PCP verification form needed to earn My Wellness points for visits between Aug. 15-31
Receiving an annual preventive care checkup from a PCP can earn an employee or their spouse 200 My Wellness points, which is half of the maximum goal for the program year.
While the 2025-26 My Wellness program year is ending Aug. 14, any employee or their spouse who visits their PCP between Aug. 15-31 can still earn 200 points for the 2025-26 program year. Those who visit their PCP in this timeframe and wish to earn the 200 points should complete the PCP Verification Form with their doctor and email it to benefits@marquette.edu by Aug. 31. The My Wellness Program informational page provides more information on this as well as other activities that can earn points.
