Take part in sustainable move-out programs

Each year, move-out activities generate a significant amount of waste that ends up in landfills, contributing to environmental harm. With a little advance planning, students can help reduce that impact. Sustainable Move Out at Marquette is designed to make moving out easier while keeping reusable items out of the waste stream.

From May 4–9, students living in residence halls are invited to donate gently used dorm items to designated MarKept bins located in their buildings. In addition, unopened, unexpired nonperishable food items may be donated to Move Out for Hunger bins available in all residence halls.

Here are the listed items MarKept Move Out is accepting:

  • Decorative room items
  • Working computer equipment
  • School and office supplies
  • Kitchenware
  • Working small appliances
  • Books and textbooks
  • Cleaning supplies (any amount other than empty)
  • Laundry supplies (detergent, hampers, etc.)

Students living in apartments can make donations directly to 811 N. 16th St., the former coin laundry, from May 18-22 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

MarKept donated items will be collected and sorted for students to browse and have for low to no cost during the move-in period in August. Move Out for Hunger contributions will go to support the Backpack Program, Marquette’s on-campus student food pantry.

These efforts are fueled by volunteer assistance. Sustainable Move Out is requesting faculty, staff and students to consider registering for a flexible shift (1 to 2 hours) on its volunteer form. Driver, mover and sorter shifts run May 4-9, with a final day on May 11.
