How would you describe the book in one sentence?
A heartfelt narrative that portrays emphatically the pathos of the Cuban migratory saga through the life of a courageous and resilient refugee as she builds a new life in the United States.
Where did the idea for this book come from?
This is a fictional account of events grounded in historical reality and personal life.
Is this your first book? What is your publishing history?
No. I published extensively while teaching at Marquette for 50 years. This is my third novel, following “Chance: From Turkey With Love” and “Stolen Dreams.”
What was your favorite part of the writing/editing process?
Developing this moving story of loss, hardships, friendships and family through believable characters.
What do you hope to accomplish with this book?
I hope whoever reads this story of courage and hope appreciates the importance of freedom, for it is as precious as the blessings of life.
How does this book advance or complement your research and/or teaching?
I don’t teach anymore, but I hope that through both my scholarly and creative works I can illuminate cultural histories, human resilience and the transformative power of storytelling.
