Marquette’s Facilities Planning and Management crews continue to address issues related to heavy rainfall in the area over the past few days. Facilities crews worked with outside contractors throughout the night and continue to address known issues. Many of the water issues were near building entrances or impacted sub-basements due to city storm drain backups. The university will keep individuals in affected buildings updated as issues are mitigated.
A temporary power loss at Carpenter Tower has impacted water remediation, and work is ongoing to restore power and mitigate water issues. A backup emergency generator is operating at the building. Office of Residence Life staff are communicating directly with Carpenter Tower residents.
As facilities crews and outside contractors work to restore power to Carpenter Tower, there will be a temporary power outage from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. tonight for some buildings on campus so that a contractor can connect a generator to temporarily restore power to all of Carpenter Tower.
Please note that the generator may be in place for several days while facilities crews procure a part to permanently restore power to Carpenter. Be prepared that the generator will create additional noise.
The campus buildings that will experience this temporary power outage tonight are:
- Athletic and Human Performance Research Center
- Al McGuire Center
- Carpenter Tower
- Cobeen Hall
- Holthusen Hall
- Jesuit Residence
- Schroeder Hall
- Varsity Theatre
- Wells Street Parking Structure (Structure 2)
Updates to this schedule will be sent via safety alert texts, as needed.
Remember to report any water-related issues to MUPD via the non-emergency number, (414) 288-6800.
Safety reminders as additional heavy rainfall is forecast for this weekend
Additional rain is forecast for the greater Milwaukee area in the coming days, with the potential for another round of severe thunderstorms Friday evening into Saturday morning that may cause flooding. All in our community are reminded to never walk, swim or drive through floodwaters. Even shallow floodwater is dangerous — six inches can knock you off your feet, and one foot can carry away most vehicles. Please avoid flooded areas.
Please follow these precautions to ensure your safety:
- Avoid intersections where there is standing water. Flooded intersections and related traffic disruptions on campus will be communicated by MUPD via safety alert texts.
- Avoid driving if you are able and, if you must walk outside, avoid standing water. Follow the guidance: “If you can’t see the ground, turn around.”
- Stay clear of floodwaters after the weather event. Even after water levels drop, floodwaters may contain debris, chemicals, sewage, or hidden hazards.
- Laundry facilities on campus have been particularly affected by flooding. Do not use laundry facilities with standing water on the floors.
Watch your Marquette email and safety alert texts for updates. To receive safety alert texts, make sure your mobile phone number is up-to-date and labeled as a mobile number in MyJob (for faculty and staff) or CheckMarq (for students).
