Five teams of undergraduate researchers from Marquette University competed at the annual Big East Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium on Saturday, March 15, at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Lennard Fredric Boholst, a senior studying economics in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, won third place in the social sciences, humanities and business category for his project, “The Impact of Remittances on Filipino Households’ Health Spending,” under the research mentorship of Dr. Nicholas Jolly, associate professor of economics.
The Big East Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium brings together outstanding undergraduate scholars from across the conference for a day of academic competition and collaboration. This year’s event featured 55 teams representing all 11 Big East member institutions.

Student Presenter: Sophia Halick of the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences
Mentor: Dr. Deanna Arble, associate professor of biological sciences
Political Efficacy in the Sikh-American Community
Student Presenter: Jasleen Kaur of the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences
Mentor: Dr. Julia Azari, professor of political science
Early Biomarkers of Amyloid-Linked Cognitive Decline in a Rat Model of Alzheimer’s Disease
Student Presenters: Collin Schlut and Monika Fafrowicz of the College of Health Sciences
Mentor: Dr. Marieke Gilmartin, associate professor of biomedical sciences
Teams of one or two individuals presented their research to judges, who ranked them on a variety of factors including presenter contribution, visual quality and content, quality and depth of the project, presentation style, and responses to questions.
The symposium was held in conjunction with the Big East Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament, which ran March 11-15.
