Holstein Colloquium to examine Native American sweat lodge traditions, March 26

The Department of Social and Cultural Sciences will host the Holstein Colloquium on Thursday, March 26, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Lalumiere Hall 272, titled “Ethnohistoric characterization of Native American sweat lodges: Variation, continuity, and the archaeological record.”

The presentation will share results from a review of 59 ethnohistoric sources detailing Native American sweat lodge construction, function and ceremonial practices, with a particular focus on evidence that may remain archaeologically visible centuries or even millennia later.
