Dr. Emily Van Duyn, associate professor in the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s department of communication, will deliver this year’s Diederich College of Communication Scholarship Week keynote address. Her speech, titled “Democracy at Close Range: How Political Difference Shapes Everyday Life,” will examine how political differences within personal relationships shape political polarization. The talk will draw on a pair of her own books: “Democracy Lives in Darkness: How and Why People Keep Their Politics a Secret,” and the forthcoming “Hearts Divided: How Politics Shape Our Closest Connections.”

The lecture will be from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 9 in Johnston Hall Room 134. The college will also announce both faculty and student recipients of its Scholar of the Year awards at the lecture. It is free to attend for all members of the Marquette community and no registration is required.
