The importance of the spiritual life; added value of the Faber Center

The university’s My Wellness program aims to support employees in various facets of wellness, including spiritual wellness.

In our high stress, fast-paced, technocratic world, spirituality seems at best a luxury or privilege and at worst irrelevant. It often falls off our to-do-lists or is relegated to life’s back burner.  The many work and home obligations tend to take precedent.

However, neglecting the inner spiritual life has consequences. People can feel lost and disconnected from themselves and the larger world around them. Some feel like their life has no particular direction, lacks purpose and seems like a series of disconnected events without deeper meaning.  For others, life feels out of balance, overwhelming and lacking fulfillment.

As a Catholic, Jesuit institution, spiritual life is highly regarded and encouraged. This applies not only to Catholics and Christians but to all faiths, seekers and people of goodwill.

Taking care of your inner spiritual life has tremendous benefits. People find themselves with more energy and clarity after times of meditation, reflection and prayer. People begin to find the inner ground of their being, which roots them in the midst of change and uncertainty. They find themselves with a greater capacity to listen to themselves and others with compassion rather than judgment. They feel they are living more authentically and in alignment with their true self.  By tending to the inner spiritual life, people’s lives are not necessarily easier, yet are more satisfying.

The Faber Center for Ignatian Spirituality has been a resource on campus for the past 20 years. Through its retreat offerings, group gatherings and one-on-one conversations, countless Marquette faculty and staff have reaped these benefits. The center is a place of welcome and belonging where all who come feel seen, valued and appreciated. The many resources and programs they offer provide the tools and guidance to understand and deepen spiritual life. As a result, people have been transformed and feel a deeper sense of peace, joy and contentment.
