Winter can bring certain hazards unique to this season, including slippery roads, dangerously cold temperatures and snow and ice that can create possible physical and financial liabilities if not properly tended to on one’s property. Planning ahead can help better navigate these challenges when they arrive.
Some tips to stay well during the winter include:
- Monitor weather forecasts for winter weather every day, as this can help in planning for extra time for things like snow removal and a longer commute
- Ensure your vehicle is in good working order, including having a strong battery, working headlights, new windshield wipers and adequate washer fluid
- Drive at lower speed than normal due to increased road hazards
- Allow extra room between cars when driving and avoid being overconfident in four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive vehicle capabilities
- Always keep your gas tank at least half-full to prevent fuel line from freezing
- Keep an emergency kit in all vehicles, including warm hat, gloves, blankets, extra clothes, shovel, jumper cables, flashlight, phone charger, snow brush and scraper, first aid kit, and sand (which can be used to help provide tire traction)
- Remove snow and ice to avoid trips and falls
- If shoveling snow, push the snow with short strokes instead of lifting it to reduce heart and body strain
- Have a plan for where members of your household will go in the event of a short or long-term power and/or heat outage
- Be aware of energy assistance resources from utility companies and/or other sources
- Wear proper clothing, including warm and waterproof jackets, hats, gloves and shoes or boots to avoid frostbite, hypothermia and other conditions
- Treat frostbite or hypothermia immediately by seeing a medical professional
