As the 2025 calendar winds down, we look back on a faith-filled year at Marquette that featured a mindful reflection and celebrations of care and friendship.

University, world mourns death of Pope Francis
Pope Francis died on April 21after months of battling sickness. The Marquette community and the global Catholic community came together to mourn his death and reflect on his 12 years as pope, which were highlighted by his humility and commitment to interreligious dialogue. Student William deGuzman even reflected on meeting His Holiness in January and giving the pontiff a white zucchetto.

Steve Blaha named director of Campus Ministry
Steve Blaha, Arts ’96, was named director of Campus Ministry in January after a nationwide search. Blaha, who has been at Marquette since 2007 and previously served as interim director, has helped Campus Ministry become fully staffed and continue the important work of serving students in the year since taking on the permanent role.

Archbishop Grob blesses altar in Chapel of the Holy Family
The Most Reverend Jeffrey S. Grob was installed as archbishop of Milwaukee in January and made multiple visits to campus in 2025. Perhaps most importantly, he blessed the newly-renovated Chapel of Holy Family’s altar at Mass in September.

Campus reflects during the Lenten season
As part of a 40-day video series, Marquette faculty, staff and students reflected on what the Lenten season means to them and how the day’s reading connected to their daily lives.

Marquette names inaugural cohort of Ignatian Educators of Distinction
As part of Mission Week 2025, the Office of Mission and Ministry recognized and awarded over 30 university faculty and staff members the designation of Ignatian Educators of Distinction. Further, Rev. Fred Zagone, S.J., was awarded the Midwest Province Ignatian Educator of Distinction.

Mission and Ministry launches themes of care, friendship
The Office of Mission and Ministry filled the first week of February with a flurry of events centered on acting with care, including community lunches and a keynote from Colum McCann. Further, the office also kicked off the 2025-26 academic year with the Ignatian theme of “I have called you friends.”

Marquette travels to Japan to pray for an end to violence, advocate for cessation of nuclear weapons
As part of a larger global cohort, Marquette community members traveled to Japan to join in prayer for the end of nuclear violence and to reflect on the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on their 80th anniversary.
