Following several years of discussion and formal review through Marquette University’s shared governance processes, proposals to close the College of Education and to create a new School of Education have been approved. The Department of Educational Policy and Leadership will be re-formed as a School of Education within the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, and the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology will move to the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, effective July 1, 2026.
In July 2026, in preparation for the fall 2026 incoming class, Marquette will formally close the College of Education and establish the Department of Educational Policy and Leadership as a School of Education housed within the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences. The university operated a School of Education from 1971 until 2008, when the College of Education was established. The College of Education has reported to the same dean as that of the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences since 2021 while remaining distinct as a college. Closing the college and forming a School of Education formalizes the reporting relationship already in place.
At the same time, the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology will formally move as a department to the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences in July 2026.
Students currently pursuing their academic programs through the College of Education will retain their College of Education affiliation. Effective 2026-27, new undergraduate students in education disciplines will be enrolled in the School of Education within the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences. Graduate students will remain enrolled in the Graduate School.
