Even though some people have not finished eating their Halloween candy yet, Thanksgiving has arrived, marking the unofficial start of the holiday season for many. The holiday season often leads to overeating, thanks to large celebratory meals and the pressure or temptation to overindulge.
Some ways to avoid overeating during the holiday season include:
- Do not skip meals entirely before a holiday meal to reduce or avoid binge eating
- Look at a meal’s entire spread and decide what you want before adding food to your plate instead of adding food to your plate from every dish that is passed to you
- Savor food by eating slow to allow the body’s natural process of feeling full to work before overeating occurs
- Avoid overindulging in hors d’oeuvres prior to a large meal
- Be mindful of sugary and high-calorie drinks and opt for water to pair with meals
- Even though desserts can be pre-sliced or portioned, eat only part of a dessert portion; this is especially helpful if wanting to try multiple different desserts
- Use a smaller plate if possible to reduce portion size, since there is a natural desire that exists to fill a plate, no matter the size
- When preparing certain dishes, prepare them with gravies, sauce and dressings on the side to allow for yourself and others to moderate
- Instead of opting for seconds, set aside food for leftovers for yourself or others
