Marquette University Police Department stays committed to campus safety

Marquette University has implemented a number of new safety initiatives in recent years and continues its dedication to making safety their top concern by providing a secure environment where the campus community can focus on learning, living and working.

New this year, the Marquette University Police Department launched a traffic enforcement unit devoting officers, equipment and training resources to mitigate reckless driving in and around campus.

Between June 1, when the operation began, through Oct. 31, the new traffic enforcement unit initiated 339 traffic stops, a 77% increase over the same period the year prior. Traffic citations increased 52% from 166 in 2024 to 252 in 2025 during the same time frame. Operating while intoxicated arrests increased 283% from six in 2024 versus 23 in 2025 during the same period. It’s also noteworthy that from Jan. 1 through Oct. 31, OWI stops increased 400%, from eight in 2024 to 40 in 2025 over the same time frame.

“MUPD is committed to the safety of our community, and this new unit has certainly aided in our ongoing pedestrian safety efforts,” MUPD Chief Edith Hudson says. “College campuses are pedestrian focused spaces, and with a small investment in speed detection equipment and additional officer training, we are making strides in mitigating reckless driving in and around our campus. Our goal is to create an effective deterrence to reckless driving in our community and ultimately change dangerous traffic behaviors.”
