The Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute will host “Weather Forecasting: What Machine Learning Can and Can’t Do,” as part of its regular virtual speaker series on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Dr. Paul Roebber, distinguished professor of atmospheric sciences in the School of Freshwater Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, will discuss artificial intelligence weather prediction models and the overall challenge of weather forecasting. Roebber will explore how AIWP compares to more traditional methods, discussing the contexts of how models can be best employed and their limitations. This session will be moderated by Anyon Rettinger, events and special projects manager at NMDSI.
The Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute (NMDSI), a partnership between Northwestern Mutual, Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, is creating a technology ecosystem and advancing southeastern Wisconsin as a national center for technology, research, business and talent development. Since its inception in 2018, the NMDSI has championed academic data science and technology learning while propelling innovation in key areas. NMDSI-affiliated research projects use data science to address challenging societal issues that have a local and national impact.
