Marquette University Police Department wants to remind you again to exercise basic precautions when leaving a car unattended.
Always be aware of surroundings and lock vehicles and residences — especially when unattended. To prevent a vehicle theft and reduce risks for a break-in, be sure to:
- Always lock vehicle doors when you are in the car and away from it
- Do not leave valuables — computers, wallets, phones, personal identification, keys, checkbooks — in view. If you leave any such item behind, it should be locked in the trunk.
- Secure valuables and engrave expensive items with identifying information
- Consult with MUPD Crime Prevention about effective theft prevention devices, including steering wheel locks (e.g., “The Club”)
- Report any suspicious activity to MUPD
Thefts of Hyundai and Kia models, most often Hyundai Sonatas and Elantras, as well as Kia Souls and Sportages continue to be an issue. The vehicle years of particular concern are 2012-20.
Individuals with these cars should be particularly vigilant and should consider purchasing a club anti-theft device to install on the car’s steering wheel as an added layer of security. Many types are available online for $17-$70.

The university encourages all students, faculty and staff to download MUPD’s free safety app EagleEye.
The app features a mobile Blue Light feature, which allows users to press a button in the app to connect directly to MUPD and send the device’s location in real-time, as long as location services are turned on.
