Have a fun, safe and respectful Halloween weekend

Dear students,

As Halloween weekend approaches, I want to take a moment to encourage you to celebrate in ways that reflect care for yourself, others and our Marquette community.

There are plenty of events happening across campus this week to help you celebrate with your classmates, including:

  • Campus Activities Board (CAB) is hosting “Trick or Trivia” on Thursday, Oct. 30, starting at 9 p.m. on the Annex Court and a movie night of “The Addams Family” on Friday, Oct. 31, at 8 p.m. in the Varsity Theatre.
  • The Golden Eagles women’s soccer team will battle Big East rival Seton Hall on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. at Valley Fields.

As you enjoy the weekend, please be mindful of your choices. Underage drinking, misuse of alcohol or drugs, and disruptive behavior are inconsistent with Marquette’s values and diminish our ability to treat one another with dignity and respect. Make choices that protect your own well-being and foster a safe environment for everyone, including those who choose not to drink.

If you’re dressing up, take a moment to think about how your costume might impact others. Choose something that aligns with our culture of inclusion and allows you to move comfortably and safely throughout the night.

Please also stay alert and aware of your surroundings. Use crosswalks, obey traffic signals and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.

Know that Marquette is vigilant about doing everything possible to keep you safe:

  • MUPD and other local law enforcement agencies will have increased patrols over the weekend.
  • We expect students to be respectful and responsible on campus and off. Laws concerning underage drinking, public intoxication, open containers, illegal substances and public disturbance will be enforced.

Take advantage of resources:

Look out for one another:

  • Many of you have gone through bystander intervention and Red Watch Band training. Put this training to use if necessary.
  • The university adheres to its Good Samaritan Policy, and we expect students to uphold the community expectations expressed in the Student Conduct Code — respect for self and for others — and to comply with municipal laws.
  • Marquette also has resources available if a community member needs help.

Please use your best judgement to have a safe and fun Halloween.

Sincerely,

Dr. Chris Navia
Acting Vice President for Belonging and Student Affairs
