Division of Belonging and Student Affairs elevates the student experience

The Division of Belonging and Student Affairs has an updated structure organized around five pillars, the culmination of a yearlong effort that reflects the university’s deep commitment to fostering belonging, supporting holistic student development and strengthening campuswide collaboration.

“This is a students-first structure that will ensure that all receive a transformational co-curricular experience and feel welcome and supported at Marquette,” said Acting Provost Sarah Feldner. “I want to thank Dr. Chris Navia and her team for the thoughtful, mission-oriented approach to this important work.”

The division is led by Dr. Chris Navia, acting vice president for belonging and student affairs, and each of the five pillars is headed by an experienced leader dedicated to enhancing the student experience:

  • Student Community Engagement and Social Responsibility — Dr. Carie Hertzberg, assistant vice president of belonging and student affairs
  • Student Development — Erin Gannon, dean of students
  • Residential Life and Housing — Mary Janz, senior director of housing and residence life
  • Student Belonging and Engagement — Sarah Piñón, director of inclusion and belonging
  • Facilities and Operations — Rick Arcuri, executive director of business operations and auxiliary services

DBSA 2025–30: Updating our mission, vision and values

The division’s newly developed strategic vision for 2025–30 aligns closely with the university-wide Marquette 2031 Strategic Plan, Guided by Mission, Inspired to Change

Following a yearlong process of mapping, consultation and prioritization, DBSA has identified 12 key priorities for the coming year. These priorities are designed to create a more integrated and inclusive student experience, in close collaboration with academic units, campus partners and community organizations.

At the heart of the strategic plan are four guiding commitments:

  • Enhancing belonging and inclusion for all students
  • Expanding high-impact practices, including service, leadership and dialogue initiatives
  • Building collaborative partnerships across campus and with the Milwaukee community
  • Using assessment and data to inform and strengthen student experience initiatives

As Marquette continues to prepare students to be ethical leaders engaged in both campus life and the broader world, DBSA will play a central role in shaping a student-centered environment rooted in Jesuit values. This new division represents not just a structural change, but also a renewed commitment to cultivating a campus where every student feels a deep sense of belonging and purpose.

The campus community is encouraged to partner with the new division, utilize the many resources for students, and help DBSA connect students to the many ways they can find community, build leadership skills and engage outside the classroom.
