Celebrate First Gen Week, Nov. 3-7 

Marquette will celebrate its first-generation college students during First-Gen Week, Nov. 3–7, with events designed to recognize their achievements, share their stories and build a stronger sense of belonging across campus. All members of the Marquette community are invited to take part. 

The Office of Inclusion and Belonging, Institute for Women’s Leadership, Educational Opportunity Program and the Career Center will host events throughout the week: 

Tuesday, Nov. 4 

  • Lunch and Learn with Dr. Rachel Gable, author of “The Hidden Curriculum: First Generation Students at Legacy Universities” (open to faculty and staff) 
  • First-Gen Week keynote: Inclusion and Excellence for All 
    • 4 p.m. in the Raynor Library Beaumier Suites 
    • Dr. Rachel Gable, author of “The Hidden Curriculum: First Generation Students at Legacy Universities,” will speak on what first generation students teach us about tacit rules and unnecessary barriers in higher education. A Q&A session will follow. 

Wednesday, Nov. 5 

  • Dear First-Year Me: First-gen story circle led by Laila Thomas 
    • 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in AMU 254
  • First-Gen Connect 
    • 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Lemonis Center for Student Success multipurpose room 
    • Build your network: connect with first-gen Marquette students, alumni and employer partners 

Thursday, Nov. 6 

  • First-Gen, First Nations Social Hour 
    • Noon to 1 p.m. in AMU 111 (Center for Engagement and Inclusion) 
    • Celebrate First-Gen Week with other first-generation Indigenous students. All students are welcome. 

Friday, Nov. 7 

  • First-Gen Friday Celebration 
    • Noon to 1 p.m. in AMU 163 
    • Celebrate First-Gen Week with food, fun and community and take part in a free T-shirt giveaway.
