Dear Alumni and Friends,
I’m so pleased to welcome the faculty, staff and student body of the Diederich College of Communication back to campus for another year. It promises to be an exciting one, full of growth and learning for the next generation of communicators.
One of my favorite things about this college is the way we intentionally develop servant leaders. We are constantly reflecting on how communicators can use their talents to better society, then using our conclusions as a guide for the way we teach students. The Communication Leadership Concentration Program, or C-LEAD, is a great example of this. Each year, 20 of the college’s top sophomores are paired with mentors and go through specialized activities to develop their ethical decision-making skills. Some truly remarkable students have gone through C-LEAD, and I encourage you to read about them in this newsletter.
We are able to have a transformative impact on students because of the great people in our college community. I’m excited to introduce you to two of them: Lori Richards and Dr. Virginia Sánchez. Lori is an alumna of our college and the CEO of Mueller Communications, one of Milwaukee’s leading public relations firms. Dr. Sánchez is rejoining our college as an assistant professor of corporate communication after getting her undergraduate degree here. Both are using the skills they learned here as students to touch others’ lives. Our alumni’s enthusiasm for continued engagement with the college is one of the biggest reasons I am so optimistic about the future.
I invite you all to stop in and visit Johnston Hall if you’re ever in the area or reach out to us through email. We always love hearing about what you’ve done since graduation. Your stories make me proud to be dean.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kati Berg
Acting Dean of the Diederich College of Communication
