Two Marquette professors selected for International College of Dentists fellowship

Dr. Zaid Badr, clinical assistant professor and director of the Technological Innovation Center, and Dr. Manal Hamdan, assistant professor and director of the predoctoral program in oral and maxillofacial radiology, will be inducted as fellows of the International College of Dentists on Sept. 13 in San Diego.

One of the oldest and most prestigious honorary dental societies in the world, fellowship to the ICD is by invitation only and recognizes dentists for “outstanding professional achievement, meritorious service and dedication to the continued progress of dentistry for the benefit of humankind.”

“This is a tremendous and well-deserved honor for Drs. Hamdan and Badr,” said Dr. Elsbeth Kalenderian, dean of the School of Dentistry. “They are both dedicated to student learning and are top professionals in digital dentistry and artificial intelligence. Fewer than 3% of dentists in the United States have been accepted for fellowship in this society, and we are proud to feature this caliber of professionals and instructors at the Marquette School of Dentistry.”

Badr was recognized by Marquette University at the 2025 Distinguished Scholars Program as the Participating Faculty Research Award recipient. His research in the field of digital and restorative dentistry focuses on CAD/CAM materials, addressing critical gaps in understanding their clinical performance and applications while contributing to the development of evidence-based best practices for their use in clinical settings. He is also part of a research team working on democratizing computer vision applications in dental radiology by using auto-machine learning. His contributions have been recognized through peer-reviewed publications, presentations at national and international conferences, and leadership roles as a session chair and reviewer for prestigious journals. Recently, his article, “Digitally-Driven Surgical Guide for Alveoloplasty Prior to Immediate Denture Placement” was published in the Dentistry Journal as part of special issue on new trends in Digital Dentistry.

Hamdan, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist, specializes in Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and artificial intelligence applications in dentistry, for which she is the recipient of several awards, including the Albert G. Richards Research Grant Award and the AAOMR Research Award. In 2025, Hamdan served as co-editor of a research book titled Artificial Intelligence for Oral Health Care: Applications and Future Prospects; Hamdan and Badr co-edited the “Oral Health Imaging” chapter.
