Marquette University mourns the loss of MUPD officer Scott Metz, who passed away from a cardiac event while participating in a mountain bike race on Saturday, July 26.
Officer Metz was a beloved teammate who touched many lives since he began working at Marquette in the university’s then-Department of Public Safety in 2006. In 2023 Officer Metz earned the MUPD Distinguished Service Award and the Life-Saving Award for his exceptional service in the performance of his duties and his dedication to MUPD’s mission within the community.
“Among many other things, Scott will be remembered as a wonderful teammate and for his excitement and dedication to teaching within the police mountain bike community,” said Chief Edith Hudson. “He was known and respected by many, and his positive impact on the profession will be felt for many years.”
Officer Metz is survived by his wife, Gina, a Milwaukee police officer, their children and several grandchildren.

A public visitation will be held on Friday, Aug. 1, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Max A. Sass & Sons, located at 8910 W. Drexel Ave., Franklin, Wisconsin, 53132. A service will follow at 6 p.m.
