While over 38 million Americans have diabetes, prediabetes is estimated to affect one in every three. Prediabetes occurs when the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood is too high, but not high enough to be clinically diagnosed as diabetes. Those who have prediabetes are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes within 10 years. Prediabetes also increases risk for heart disease and stroke.
The following are ways to help prevent diabetes and improve overall health:
- Eat healthy foods, including whole grains, lean proteins, low-fat dairy and plenty of vegetables. Watch portion sizes and avoid sweets and fried foods.
- Exercise regularly
- Lose weight
- Take medicines as directed
- Participate in regular visits with a primary care provider and receive screenings as recommended. Regular checkups allow for early detection of diseases like diabetes, which increases survival rate and quality of life due to early treatment.
