Faculty and staff have access to up to six free, confidential counseling sessions through LifeMatters, Marquette’s Employee Assistance Program. Counselors can help address and support a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, substance abuse, family problems, financial pressures and more. To take advantage of this benefit, contact LifeMatters by either calling 1-800-634-6433, texting “Hello” to 61295, or visiting mylifematters.com and using the password “MU1”.
Mental Health Awareness Month is observed every May to help break the stigma of and support people living with mental health conditions. Millions of Americans live with mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder.
Mental health plays a huge role in overall health and well-being. It affects everything, including how you think, feel and act, and helps determine how you make healthy choices and cope with stress. Mental health is always there; your state continually changes depending on resources and challenges. While doing things like getting a good night’s sleep, exercising, eating healthy and spending time outdoors may improve one’s mental health, speaking with a mental health professional can help address underlying causes of decreased mental health.
If you need mental health-related crisis support or are worried about someone else, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available by calling or texting 988 or chatting online at 988lifeline.org.
For those on the Marquette medical insurance plan, instructions on searching for behavioral health providers can be found here. For additional mental health resources, including further information on the Employee Assistance Program, visit the My Emotional Health page.
