Marquette joins worldwide church in celebration of new pope

It is with deep joy that I write to share news of the election of His Holiness Leo XIV as the 267th successor of Saint Peter and first U.S.-born supreme pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.

Our Marquette community joins the worldwide church in celebration. We also offer thanks to the College of Cardinals, who have followed the guidance of the Holy Spirit during this significant period of transition.

This moment offers an opportunity to reflect on our own Catholic, Jesuit mission, which informs all that we do here at Marquette. We reaffirm our commitment to a search for truth, the discovery and sharing of knowledge, the fostering of personal and professional excellence, the promotion of a life of faith and the development of leadership expressed in service to others – all in pursuit of the greater glory of God and the common benefit of the human community.

A celebratory Mass will be held on Friday, May 9, at noon in the Chapel of the Holy Family, to which all are invited. Let us join in prayer for his strength, wisdom and courage as he takes up the cross of leadership in these challenging and yet hope-filled times.

Rev. John Thiede, S.J.
