For the second year, the Diederich College of Communication will welcome high school students from across the Milwaukee area for a free, one-of-a-kind, on-campus workshop focused on storytelling, personal branding and exploring the dynamic field of communication.
Led by faculty members Julia Schultz and Patrick Johnson, this workshop will offer an engaging, hands-on introduction to strategic communication and journalism. Participants will use cutting-edge tools and techniques to uncover their personal strengths, develop their brand and bring their stories to life.
Workshop Highlights
- Discover Your Personal Brand
Learn how branding plays a key role in communication — and how to define and express your authentic self, whether preparing for a college application, internship or first job. - Celebrate Your Story
From writing to video to audio, students will experiment with multimedia tools to share who they are — and understand how storytelling is a powerful skill that can lead to careers in journalism, advertising, media production and more.
Last year’s event brought together students from Brookfield Central, Brookfield East, Divine Savior Holy Angels, Hamilton, Pius XI, West Allis Central and Whitefish Bay High School. The day included dynamic sessions led by Schultz and Johnson; Schultz guided students through the process of identifying their personal brand archetypes, while Johnson helped them craft those narratives into multimedia presentations.
Students were highly engaged, asked thoughtful questions and delivered compelling final projects to an audience of peers and parents. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many students expressing strong interest in returning to campus — and even applying to Marquette.
