Dear friends of the College of Education,
At Marquette, we are called to be people for others, driven by St. Ignatius’ call to “Go forth and set the world on fire.” Each of us can be the spark that makes a positive impact, whether at a local or global level.
In this digital issue of Marquette Education, we highlight the various ways the College of Education is rising to meet the moment — providing the innovative support and leadership our communities need in today’s complex and rapidly changing world.
Our lead feature spotlights our new cross-categorical special education minor and post-baccalaureate teacher certification program in special education. These programs provide pathways to special education certification at the undergraduate and graduate levels at a time where schools across Wisconsin face vacancies in these roles.
Support can look different than it did in the past, as showcased by telehealth’s rapid adoption and staying power in recent years. Dr. Lee Za Ong, associate professor of counselor education and counseling psychology, launched the Telehealth Research Community, which works in tandem with the Marquette Telehealth Accelerator to fund cutting-edge projects — including Dr. Karisse Callender’s implementation of dialectical behavior therapy and art therapy through a video conferencing platform — and ensure the next generation is prepared to utilize technology ethically.
Finally, Dr. Gabriel Velez, associate professor of educational policy and leadership, took part in a cross-disciplinary conversation with Dr. Nakia Gordon, associate professor of psychology in Marquette’s Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, to assess pressures on today’s high school and college students and efforts Marquette has taken to assist, including innovative peer-led wellness courses and the holistic integration of counseling, medical care, wellness and physical recreation in the new Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility.
Thank you for your continued support of the College of Education. We’d love to hear from you about ways we can further make an impact.
