Research and other federal grant activity
- Federal Work-Study, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants will remain at current level — The Department of Education has confirmed that funds for Federal Work-Study and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants will be made available for the upcoming academic year at the same levels as the current academic year. Marquette’s final allocation amounts for 2025-26 are not posted yet; however, the university expects to receive approximately the same amount as we did in the 2024-25 academic year.
- Federally funded U-RISE program discontinued — The university was notified by the National Institutes of Health that federal funding for the U-RISE program has been discontinued, in the third year of a five-year grant. The College of Health Sciences in 2022 received a $1.6 million grant from the NIH to implement curriculum and programming to support students as they gain undergraduate research expertise while cultivating a science identity and sense of inclusion in the science community. U-RISE program officials are working with the offices of Research and Sponsored Programs and General Counsel to determine next steps for the program. The university is carefully watching legal actions and processes for appeals. Updates will be shared via Marquette Today, as necessary.

Website updates
- Continue to hold on website updates — Those who are responsible for maintaining university web pages should refrain from making updates to any web pages (save for routine updates not germane to federal actions) or other materials unless provided guidance to do so by the Office of General Counsel or the Office and Marketing and Communication.
Proactive advocacy and storytelling
- President Kimo Ah Yun and other university leaders have recently attended meetings with elected representatives in Madison and Washington, D.C., to advocate for support for higher education, particularly in the areas of research, financial aid and other federally funded activities.
- University leaders have also been working closely with higher education organizations including the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, and the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities as these groups continue to advocate for the future of higher education.
- Marquette joined with other leaders from Wisconsin’s biohealth industry, health systems and higher education institutions to the state’s congressional delegation to sign a coalition letter in support of National Institutes of Health funding.
- The Office of Marketing and Communication is emphasizing internal and external storytelling that reinforces the value of higher education and the value of a Marquette education, in particular, to key stakeholders.
