Marquette was honored with an Inspiring Alignment with a United Way Initiative award at the United Way’s Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on Tuesday, April 22, in recognition of the university’s commitment to community engagement.

Marquette partners with the United Way on two major initiatives: Project Homeless Connect and the Holiday Giving Tree.

Project Homeless Connect is a one-day, one-stop annual event where people experiencing homelessness can access the multiple services and resources they need, all inside the Alumni Memorial Union. Resources and services include access to housing, employment, clothing, health and dental screenings, and contact with professional representatives who address questions with legal, educational, mental health and social security matters.

Marquette has partnered with the United Way for more than 25 years on the Holiday Giving Tree, ensuring hundreds of community members feel loved during the holiday season. Sponsored by University Staff Senate, the 2024 Holiday Giving Tree resulted in 340 gifts for those who might otherwise not receive anything for the holidays

Marquette was represented at the breakfast by Maria Cooper, administrative assistant in the University Honors Program; Maddie Makinster, event planner in the Alumni Memorial Union; Katie Mertz, director for public service at Marquette University Law School; and Carol Trecek, assistant dean of external affairs in the School of Dentistry.
