UPDATE: Afternoon of Friday, March 21
With the family’s blessing, the university is sharing the identity of the student who passed away on March 20. John Koser was a senior double majoring in finance and marketing in the College of Business Administration, who was set to graduate from Marquette in May. He is remembered as an engaged member of the Marquette community, participating in the Investment Club and also working as a Sodexo student-employee in the Union Sports Annex. He was a bright student who will be dearly missed.
The university will hold a Mass in John’s name next week; more information will be shared in the coming days. We will also share funeral arrangements if they become available.
Please continue to keep John, his family, friends and loved ones in your prayers.
Dear Marquette community,
I am writing to you with a heavy heart to share the news that a Marquette University senior student in the College of Business Administration passed away yesterday in their off-campus apartment. Out of respect for the wishes of the family, no additional information is being shared.
We grieve with the student’s family and friends as well as fellow faculty, staff and students here on campus who were touched by this student during their time in our community. Please know that university leadership and Mission and Ministry staff are in touch with the family and are offering every available resource.
I ask that you keep the family in your prayers. Such a loss is difficult to comprehend, and I know that the coming days will be trying for the family. I hope that our love and support will help to ease their pain.
Counseling services and pastoral support are available on campus for all faculty, staff and students. Members of the university’s Counseling Center and Campus Ministry are available to provide support services for coping with grief and loss, and the Marquette Employee Assistance Program is available 24/7 for all employees and members of their households. Additional support is being provided to College of Business Administration faculty, staff and students today, including on-site counselors and pastoral care, and quiet space for reflection and processing.
Grief affects each of us differently. As a university community, the connections and bonds we share are important in these difficult times. Please check in with your classmates, friends, colleagues and family members as we navigate this time of sorrow together. May God bless you and the entire Marquette community.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kimo Ah Yun
President
Prayer on the loss of a loved one
Attributed as the Quaker Prayer
We give them back to you, dear Lord,
Who gave them to us.
Yet as you did not lose them in giving,
so we have not lost them by their return.
For what is yours is ours always, if we are yours.
And life is eternal and love is immortal
And death is only a horizon.
And a horizon is nothing more
than a limit to our sight.
