Marquette reports record-breaking research and development expenditures for FY24

Marquette has reported a record $49.1 million in research and development expenditures for the fiscal year 2024, closing June 30. This figure will be finalized in November 2025 when the National Science Foundation completes its reporting and issues its annual Higher Education Research and Development Survey.

The fiscal year figure represents an institutional record and nearly 3% increase (2.7%) over fiscal year 2023 ($47.8 million).

Marquette also saw a significant increase in R&D expenditures from federal funding, from $20.1 million in FY23 to $23.1 million in FY24. Federal support now comprises 47% of the university’s R&D, its largest source of funds for the year. Half of the federal funds came from the National Institutes of Health, with NSF being the next most significant federal source (20%). Funding from the Departments of Energy and Defense also contributed to this growth.

“Marquette is tremendously proud of the work of our talented faculty who live out our mission through their scholarly work,” said Dr. Jeanne Hossenlopp, vice president for research and innovation. “Federal funding plays a crucial role in supporting their groundbreaking research, often in collaboration with other colleagues, and creating opportunities for training the next generation of researchers.  Federally funded work is the crucial foundation for novel discoveries in health and technology that can ultimately be translated into practice to benefit society.”

Hossenlopp added that milestones such as these underscore the Marquette 2031 strategic plan’s commitment to creating a vibrant, growing and sustainable research environment that utilizes the diverse talents of our community of scholars and that attracts collaborators who share our commitment to engaging in research and scholarship that addresses the emerging challenges of an ever-changing world.

The HERD Survey is an annual census of U.S. colleges and universities that expended at least $150,000 in separately accounted-for R&D in the fiscal year. The survey collects information on R&D expenditures by field of research and source of funds and also gathers information on types of research, expenses, and headcounts of R&D personnel.
