Campus Masses to be held in remembrance of student John Koser, March 26-27; funeral information shared

Marquette will offer a Memorial Mass for the repose of the soul of John Koser on Wednesday, March 26, at noon. On Thursday, March 27, at 10 p.m., Mass will be offered for the intention of John. Both Masses will be held in St. Joan of Arc Chapel.

Koser, a senior in the College of Business Administration double majoring in finance and marketing, passed away in his off-campus apartment on March 20. He came to Marquette University from Inverness, Illinois, and was set to graduate from Marquette in May. He is remembered as an engaged member of the Marquette community with a noted curiosity and interest in learning. He was an active participant in the Investment Club and also worked as a Sodexo student-employee in the Union Sports Annex. He was a bright student who will be dearly missed.

A memorial for John is on display in the lobby of O’Brien Hall for reflection and prayer.

The family has given the university permission to share the funeral arrangements they  have planned. John’s funeral will be held Friday, March 28, at 10:30 a.m., at Holy Family Catholic Church in Inverness. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The wake will be held on Thursday, March 26, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Smith Corcoran Funeral Home in Palatine, Illinois.

A memorial Mass allows a community to gather both to mourn, but also to celebrate our belief in the Resurrection. Distinct from a funeral or memorial Mass, a Mass intention may be offered at any Mass.  The priest specifically recalls the intention during Mass, interceding for them in a particular way.

A memorial Mass, often referred to as a Requiem, allows a community to gather both to mourn, but also to celebrate our belief in the Resurrection.  We commend the soul of our brother to the Lord, trusting in the Easter promise of eternal life.  At the same time, we also commend his family, his friends, and our entire community to the Lord, relying in our sure and certain hope that as we mourn, we will all be reunited at the eternal banquet when every tear will be wiped from our eyes.  All are welcome to join in prayer.

The Counseling Center staff are available for students, for drop-in visits and by appointment in the Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility; visit or call 414-288-7172. The Counseling Center is staffed in-person, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the week, and counselors are available 24/7 via phone.

Please remember John, his family and friends, and our entire Marquette community in prayer as we mourn this community loss.
