Humanities Research Colloquium book talk with Dr. Sergio González, Feb. 27

The Humanities Research Colloquium will host a book talk with Dr. Sergio González, assistant professor of history in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, on Thursday, Feb. 27, at 4 p.m. in Marquette Hall 105. The talk is also available via Teams.

Hospitality practices grounded in religious belief have long exercised a profound influence on Wisconsin’s Latino communities. In “Strangers No Longer: Latino Belonging and Faith in Twentieth-Century Wisconsin” (University of Illinois Press, 2024), González examines the power relations at work behind the types of hospitality — welcoming and otherwise — practiced on newcomers in both Milwaukee and rural areas of the Badger State. In doing so, he takes up timely questions about the role of religion in the settlement experiences of immigrants, migrants and refugees.

A Q&A session will follow the talk, and light refreshments will be provided. To obtain the Teams meeting link, email Dr. Melissa Ganz, associate professor of English.
