How to face the negative impacts of diet culture, Feb. 26

Melissa Schneider, MA, LPC, CIR, of the Counseling Center will present “Diet Culture: How to cope with the negative impact it has on college and graduate students’ mental health and their relationship with food and their body image” on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 5:30 p.m. in the Weasler Auditorium.

Register for this event through the Eventbrite invite.

This event is open to students, faculty, staff and the public. Those who cannot attend in person are encouraged to participate virtually through this Microsoft Teams link.

Schneider will discuss how diet culture and social media can lead to disordered eating, body image dissatisfaction and mental health concerns. The event will focus on strategies and tools to cope with mental health and promote overall well-being. Additionally, this presentation will explore how to identify what matters to us and how to align our goals with the type of person we want to be.

If you struggle with keeping up with unrealistic expectations for yourself, feelings of failure or thoughts around “not being good enough,” or if you have a student, family member, friend or loved one that experiences these thoughts, this event will provide an opportunity to take a new, more flexible approach to address these thoughts/beliefs.

The Marquette Counseling Center and College of Nursing is co-sponsoring the first collaborative event with all four units of the new Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility. This event will be held as part of Eating Disorder Awareness Week. Three gift cards to Sendiks will be raffled off to in-person attendees.
