The Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program is supporting Street Angels Milwaukee, an outreach program for people experiencing homelessness, as this year’s community service project for graduating seniors.
“I cared for a homeless individual during my cardiology rotation last semester and quickly realized the additional complexities that need to be considered when caring for a patient within this population,” said Tori Schlavensky, a student in the cohort and the leader of fundraising and volunteer efforts. “As future advanced practice nurse practitioners, we will care for many patients who are experiencing homelessness, so it is important that we are aware of various resources available within our community.”
The AGACNP is looking for volunteers to help prepare bagged lunches for Street Angels on March 18 from 12-2 p.m. in Straz Hall. Students are also encouraged to donate food items for the bagged lunches, including the following:
· Soft fruits, such as tangerines, bananas, plums or fruit cups with a spoon
· Sandwich: PB&J or deli meat/cheese
· Chewy granola bar or protein bar
· Individual bags of chips
· Sweet treats, such as Little Debbie snacks or cookies
· Water flavor packets for bottled water drinks
· Other snacks, such as string cheese, beef sticks, etc.
Street Angels runs twice-weekly street outreach programs in which they serve hot meals and supply community members with food for later. Anyone interested in donating money can contact Program Director Dr. Deb Casper at deb.casper@marquette.edu.
