‘Unceded Milwaukee’ interactive map visualizes Indigenous history

Unceded Milwaukee is a new interactive map for users to visualize Indigenous Milwaukee in the age of empire before and in the immediate aftermath of the 1833 Treaty of Chicago that ceded this Indigenous homeland to the United States.

The interactive map overlays the Milwaukee of today with an 1812 map of the area and marks early camps, villages, trading posts and trails in Milwaukee County.

For the remainder of the fall semester, you can explore the interactive map on display in large format at the touch table located on the second floor of Raynor Library.

Both Unceded Milwaukee and the related primary source digital reader about the 1833 Treaty of Chicago are inspired by the university’s Land and Water Acknowledgement

Unceded Milwaukee was produced and published by Raynor Library’s Digital Scholarship Assistant Lauren Reszczynski and Digital Scholarship Librarian Maxwell Gray. Questions about the project can be emailed to Gray.
