Marquette University mourns the loss of Dr. Jim Schwengel, a School of Dentistry alumnus and longtime adjunct professor, who died Thursday, July 18. He was 80 years old.
Jim, who graduated with his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Marquette in 1968, spent 28 years as an adjunct professor of General Dental Sciences and was a member of the School of Dentistry’s admissions committee. He retired from the school in May 2024.
Upon graduation from the School of Dentistry, Jim served as a captain in the United States Army Dental Corps and then practiced dentistry in Cedarburg from 1970 to 1998.
“Dr. Jim Schwengel touched the lives of at least two generations of Wisconsin dental providers,” said Dr. Mark Mandel, adjunct clinical professor. “He was a consummate professional. His priorities were always to provide the best dental care possible to MUSOD patients and offer the best dental education possible to his MUSOD students. His pledge was to deliver care the ‘Marquette Way.’ To all with whom Jim worked, he was one of the good guys. He will be missed.”
A full obituary is available online. Services will be held Sunday, November 3 at Eernisse Funeral Home in Cedarburg. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. with a funeral service at 3 p.m., followed by a coffee and dessert reception.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks to consider donations to your local PBS station, Faith Lutheran Church in Cedarburg, or Bridge Scholars, a college grant program supporting graduates of Milwaukee’s Golda Meir High School.
