Commencement date will be determined based on Milwaukee Bucks’ first round playoff outcome; graduation speakers announced

Marquette’s 143rd Commencement ceremony will be held Saturday, May 11, or Sunday, May 12, at Fiserv Forum, located at 1111 Vel R. Phillips Ave., Milwaukee. With the first round of the NBA playoffs starting April 20, it is our understanding that the Milwaukee Bucks organization will not be able to notify the university of the exact date for Commencement until April 28 (game 4) at the soonest or May 4 (game 7) at the latest, depending on first round playoff results.

Marquette leaders share in our students’ and their families’ frustrations and continue to ask for patience and understanding while the university awaits the Bucks’ schedule.

Global Brigades CEO and co-founder Dr. Shital Vora to serve as undergraduate Commencement speaker; Children’s Wisconsin CEO Peggy Troy will deliver graduate ceremony speech

Shital Vora

Dr. Shital Vora, H Sci ’04, PT ’06, established the very first Marquette Medical Brigade club as a student in 2003. This developed into the Global Brigades model that is used today throughout the international nonprofit organization. Vora, Global Brigades co-founder Steven Atamian and a leadership team that includes her husband, Pallav Vora, have started over 650 active groups who travel to Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua, Ghana, Guatemala, Belize and Greece to provide primary health care and education in rural communities.

Prior to dedicating to Global Brigades full time, Vora spent four years working as a Doctor of Physical Therapy focusing on orthopedics and sports medicine for one of the nation’s largest and most successful orthopedic practices in Chicago.

Vora currently sits on the Marquette University Health Sciences advisory board. She was recognized as Marquette University’s Young Alumna of the Year in 2009 and honored with the university’s Spirit of Marquette Award in 2016.

Peggy Troy

Peggy Troy, Nurs ’74, is the first female president and CEO of Children’s Wisconsin, the only health system in Wisconsin that is 100% dedicated to kids. Under her leadership, the hospital is ranked among the best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, employs more than 6,500 people throughout the state, and is served by 775 of Wisconsin’s top pediatric physicians and advanced practice providers from the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Troy, a Marquette trustee emerita who served on the university’s Board of Trustees until 2023, is a strong community advocate and volunteers her time to organizations that improve overall health and quality of life. She is a member of the Greater Milwaukee Committee and serves on the boards of Zurn Elkay Water Solutions Corporation, the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, QuadMed, the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center.

Troy has been honored with a wide variety of awards including the 2022 Alumna of the Year Award from Marquette, 2019 Distinguished Service Award from the Wisconsin Hospital Association, 2018 CEO of the Year by BizTimes and the 2017 Imprint Award from Professional Dimensions.

REMINDER: RSVP for undergraduate Commencement, guest tickets by April 26

Undergraduate seniors who are graduating must RSVP for Commencement by Friday, April 26, using the link provided to them in the email they received in their Marquette email account from University Special Events.

Importantly, the undergraduate Commencement ceremony RSVP process is entirely separate from the application for graduation process, which is handled by the Registrar’s Office. The deadline to apply for graduation is Friday, April 26. Students must complete both processes.

Guest tickets are again required for the undergraduate Commencement ceremony. Each undergraduate student who will be attending the ceremony may invite up to six guests, and each guest will require an electronic ticket to enter Fiserv Forum. Graduating students themselves will not need a ticket.

There will be no ticketing requirement nor a limit on guests for the Graduate School, Graduate School of Management and Health Sciences professional ceremony because of the size of those classes.

In keeping with tradition, the School of Dentistry, Law School and College of Health Sciences’ professional programs (Doctor of Physical Therapy, Doctor of Occupational Therapy and Master of Physician Assistant Studies) will hold separate ceremonies and will not be part of the Fiserv Forum ceremonies; details will be announced later. There will be no other college-specific ceremonies.

All Commencement-related information, including the ticketing process, is available on the Commencement website
