It is essential to recognize and celebrate the significant contributions of Black-owned businesses to the fabric of our Near West Side community during Black History Month and all year long.

Historically, Black entrepreneurs have had to overcome systemic barriers and discrimination. Despite these challenges, they have not only succeeded in generating profit but also served as inspiring role models for others. Today, the Near West Side thrives with a diverse array of Black-owned businesses.

The Zen Dragonfly is a healing space founded by Angela Smith. She teaches yoga, reiki, divination, tarot and more. Smith’s journey began with addressing the absence of Black women elders in the healing community. Now, through this sanctuary, individuals can embark on a journey of personal growth and empowerment.

JazzyRaé Jewels & Accessories sells a selection of fashionable clothes and jewelry, curated by JohnRaé Stowers, who is a wife, mother, sister, aunt, educator, friend and sorority member, in addition to serving as Marquette’s associate director of student support services in the Educational Opportunity Program. Lisa Kaye Catering | 944 N. 33rd St.

Lisa Kaye Catering is owned by Chef Lisa McKay, who is a prominent figure in the Near West Side culinary scene and the winner of the 2017 Near West Side Partners, Inc.’s Rev-Up MKE competition. Specializing in corporate events, general catering and weddings, her company is known to be a gourmet off-site catering company celebrated for its vibrant blend of Southwestern and Southern cuisines.
