Photo gallery: Artist Mauricio Ramirez restores ‘Our Roots Say That We’re Sisters’ mural

Artist Mauricio Ramirez, who originally painted the “Our Roots Say That We’re Sisters” mural in 2020, returned to campus in December to touch up the mural. The work was required after the wall underwent tuckpointing and regular maintenance in the summer.

The “Our Roots Say That We’re Sisters” mural was installed on campus in celebration of diversity and racial equity. A Mural Committee invited seven local Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) male and female artists to submit proposals and “Our Roots” was the winning submission in a vote that engaged more than 1,400 members of the Marquette community.

Since its initial completion, the mural has gained appreciation and recognition from the Marquette and Milwaukee communities.

The mural also inspired a podcast series amplifying the stories of women students, faculty, staff and alumnae who have used their gifts to make a meaningful impact on others.
