Dr. Andrea Guzman on ethical questions of AI in media work, April 27

The 2023 Diederich College of Communication Scholarship Week keynote speaker is Dr. Andrea Guzman, associate professor of journalism at Northern Illinois University. She will deliver a lecture on “Should Machines Write about Death? Key Ethical Questions in the Expansion of Al into Journalism & Media Work,” on Thursday, April 27, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Marquette Hall 100.

Guzman, co-director of The Human-Machine Communication Lab, researches HMC theory and people’s perceptions of AI, including voice-based assistants and automated news-writing programs. Guzman is co-editor of “The SAGE Handbook of Human-Machine Communication” (July 2023) and editor of “Human-Machine Communication: Rethinking Communication, Technology, and Ourselves.”

Guzman is the former chair of the Human-Machine Communication Interest Group of the International Communication Association, and her research has been published in top journals, such as New Media & Society, and presented at leading academic conferences.
