Memorial Mass for Rev. Joseph G. Mueller, S.J., March 31

March 27, 2023

A memorial Mass for Rev. Joseph G. Mueller, S.J., former rector of the Marquette Jesuit Community, associate dean for academic affairs in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences and associate professor of theology in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, will be held on Friday, March 31, at 10 a.m. at Gesu Church.

Father Mueller’s classmate, Rev. Fred Zagone, S.J., will preach, and Rev. Gregory O’Meara, S.J., will preside.

Father Mueller began teaching theology at Marquette in 1999. From 2008 to 2010, he served as associate dean for academic affairs in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences. After his return to the Department of Theology, he was appointed the Rector of the Marquette Jesuit Community in July 2017. In 2018, Father Mueller joined the University Leadership Council. Father Mueller was a fixture on campus for decades and a friend to many.

In 2020, he was named the dean of the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley, California. At Santa Clara, Father Mueller recruited noteworthy theologians whose scholarship will have a profound impact on the future of the Church and obtained significant grants to enhance Latinx theology and ministry.

A Detroit native who entered the Society of Jesus in 1982 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1993, Father Mueller received his bachelor’s degree from Marquette in 1981 and earned his doctorate in sacred theology from Centre Sèvres, Paris, in 2005.
