Marquette University’s Board of Trustees elected three new members at its September 2022 meeting. The new trustees are Harvey J. Anderson II, retired strategic advisor for HP Inc.; Nicole Michaels, EY global insurance business transformation leader; and James Ryan, president and CEO of global software company Flexera.
Marquette trustees serve for three-year terms and may be re-elected to serve for a maximum of 12 years; they are volunteers and are not compensated for their service.
Harvey J. Anderson II (California)
Harvey J. Anderson II has more than 25 years of experience in legal affairs, public policy, corporate/commercial transactions and intellectual property litigation. He has counseled leading global internet, security and communications companies in private and public company settings.
A 1984 Marquette University alumnus with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Anderson is recently retired from serving as strategic advisor for HP Inc., where he had previously served as chief legal officer and corporate secretary. Harvey joined HP in June 2017 as deputy general counsel, Personal Systems, 3D Printing, Global Functions and Government Relations. Before joining HP, he served as the chief legal officer of AVG Technologies; prior to that he spent six years as the general counsel and chief legal officer of Mozilla Corp.
Anderson has a juris doctor from the University of San Francisco School of Law. He is also admitted to the U.S. Patent Bar and serves as a board member for Common Sense Media.
He received the Marquette Alumni Association Professional Achievement Award in 2021.
Nicole Michaels (Minneapolis)
Nicole Michaels is the EY global insurance business transformation leader, as well as the Americas life insurance solution leader. A 1993 graduate of Marquette University’s College of Business Administration, she is a member of the Marquette University President’s Society.
Michaels has more than 25 years of consulting experience, holding various roles in the insurance business transformation space. She has extensive knowledge in the property, casualty and life insurance industry and is very passionate about diversity and inclusiveness.
Initiatives Michaels has focused on include strategic and technology assessments, target operating model design and roadmap and business case development. She has led assessments at large and medium-sized insurance carriers based in 12 different countries.
James Ryan (Chicago)
James (Jim) Ryan, Arts ’89, is president and CEO of Flexera, a global software company headquartered outside Chicago. The 1989 Marquette University alumnus has been with the company since 1998 in roles including chief operating officer, senior vice president of global sales, and managing director of Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Under Ryan’s leadership as CEO, Flexera has experienced dramatic growth, multiple ownership changes with private equity and more than a dozen merger and acquisition transactions. He has been instrumental in growing the company’s valuation fifteenfold to now nearly $3 billion. The firm’s 1,200-plus employees worldwide have certified Flexera as a Great Place to Work, and Flexera has been named a Top Workplace by the Chicago Tribune for 10 consecutive years.
Also an operating adviser to the private equity firm Thoma Bravo since 2014, Ryan started his career at IBM in sales and remains passionate about the sales profession — he was instrumental in forming Marquette’s new Center for Professional Selling.
A Green Bay, Wisconsin, native, Ryan and his family established the Do Great Things Initiative that focuses on increasing the number of Green Bay West students who attend Marquette University and college in general. Jim and his wife Tracy, a Marquette alumna, serve as co-chairs of Marquette’s Chicago Campaign Committee and are members of the Marquette University Archbishop Henni Founders Society, the Marquette University President’s Society and the St. Ignatius Legacy Society.
