Microsoft to end basic authentication for email and calendar access

Microsoft will end support for basic authentication on Saturday, Oct. 1.

Basic authentication is an older, less secure method of accessing your email and calendar.

Going forward, Microsoft will only support modern authentication.

This security improvement means some email/calendar clients — especially older ones — may fail to connect to Office 365 as of Oct. 1. IT Services recommends email/calendar clients that use modern authentication, such as:

  • Office 365 Outlook for desktops and laptops
  • Outlook for mobile apps
  • Outlook on the Web

See the Microsoft Ending Basic Authentication webpage for additional information.
