Marquette and Milwaukee community members came together on Friday, June 17, on Central Mall for a Juneteenth Celebration hosted by Dr. Kristin Haglund, the Rev. John P. Raynor, S.J. Endowed Chair and professor in the College of Nursing, and the Milwaukee nonprofit organization Safe & Sound.
The event featured a variety of musical acts, with many performing on a live youth stage, in addition to food trucks, t-shirts, kids activities and resource tables spotlighting community organizations and Juneteenth history.
Juneteenth, which became a federal holiday last year, commemorates the emancipation of African American people who had been enslaved. June 19 is a day to remember the transformational power of human liberation as well as to celebrate Black freedom and Black culture.
