Overview
Marquette University will provide a one-time employee payment on May 20, 2022, to recognize and thank our faculty and staff employees who have helped the university succeed during extraordinary circumstances.
- Full-time benefit eligible employees who currently work at Marquette and started before 9/1/21 will receive a one-time payment of 2% of their annual base salary or a minimum of $1,000.
- Part-time benefit eligible employees who currently work at Marquette and started before 9/1/21 will receive a one-time payment of 2% of their annual base salary or a minimum of $600.
- All other non-benefit eligible employees who currently work at Marquette and started before 9/1/21 will receive a one-time payment of 2% of their annual base salary or a minimum of $200.
- Current employees who started at Marquette on or after 9/1/21 will receive a prorated amount (one-time payment and minimum amount are prorated based on start date).
- Eligible employees must be actively employed on 4/30/22. Note: suspend status is not considered actively employed.
- Faculty and staff who were employed at Marquette as of 4/30/22 will receive an email from Human Resources on Monday, May 16, confirming their eligibility for the one-time payment.
What one-time payment amount will full-time benefit eligible employees receive?
Full-time benefit eligible employees whose assignment started before 9/1/21 will receive 2% of their annual base salary or a minimum of $1,000. For those who started on 9/1/21 or later, the 2% and the minimum amount will be prorated as follows:

- October 2021 = 80%
- November 2021 = 70%
- December 2021 = 60%
- January 2022 = 50%
- February 2022 = 40%
- March 2022 = 30%
- April 2022 = 20%
- May 2022 = no one-time payment
Eligible employees must be actively employed on 4/30/22. Note: suspend status is not considered actively employed.

My assignment started on or after 9/1/21. How will that start date affect the one-time payment amount I receive?
Your one-time payment amount AND the minimum amount will be prorated for your employment category (full-time benefit eligible; part-time benefit eligible; or not benefit eligible) as follows:

- September 2021 = 90%
- October 2021 = 80%
- November 2021 = 70%
- December 2021 = 60%
- January 2022 = 50%
- February 2022 = 40%
- March 2022 = 30%
- April 2022 = 20%
- May 2022 = no one-time payment
Are there any exclusions to this one-time payment?
The following are not eligible for the one-time payment for employees:
- Employees on unpaid personal leaves of absence as of 4/30/22.
- Non-Marquette employees, including contractors and employees of vendors.
- Marquette student employees and Marquette students who are graduate assistants, teaching assistants or resident assistants.
- Employees starting on or after 5/1/2022.
What does it mean to be “benefit eligible?”
- Employees who are eligible for Marquette medical insurance meet the following criteria:
- Full-time employees with at least a nine-month appointment/assignment, OR
- Part-time employees working at least 20 hours per week (or 6 credits/semester) with at least a nine-month appointment/assignment.
- Employees who were benefit eligible at any point during the timeframe 8/31/21 – 4/30/22 are considered benefit eligible for the purpose of this one-time payment.
- Employees don’t need to be enrolled in Marquette’s medical insurance, just eligible for it.

How does this one-time employee payment apply to employees covered by collective bargaining agreements?
In compliance with Marquette’s collective bargaining agreements, we will discuss this one-time payment with the bargaining representatives of the two unions on campus (SEIU and MUPA).
What about faculty on paid sabbaticals?
Faculty on paid sabbaticals are eligible for the one-time employee payment.
Will the president and basketball coaches receive the one-time employee payment?
No, President Lovell and Head Men’s Basketball Coach Smart will donate their one-time payment to the university’s Bridge to the Future Fund, which provides financial aid assistance to students whose changing economic circumstances jeopardize their ability to continue their Marquette education. Head Women’s Basketball Coach Megan Duffy will donate her one-time payment to the Marquette Backpack Program, a free and confidential service that provides groceries to any Marquette student who is having difficulty accessing affordable, nutritious food and other essential household items.
I am on/was on an approved FMLA or military leave during this academic year. Does this affect my one-time employee payment?
- Employees currently or previously on an approved FMLA or military leave are eligible for this one-time payment with their base salary calculated as of 5/1/22.
- There are no adjustments to the one-time payment for an approved FMLA or military leave.
How is eligible pay determined to calculate the one-time employee payment?
- Your base annual salary will be calculated as of 5/1/22.
- For current part-time faculty (as of 5/1/22) on an academic year or fall/spring limited term assignment, the base annual salary is calculated as the total faculty salary paid as your primary assignment for fall 2021 and spring 2022 semesters, prorated based on your assignment start date.
- Base annual salary does not include overtime, premium pay, extra remuneration (e.g., J-Session, tenure buy-out, summer session pay, etc.), or second assignment earnings.
I taught the fall 2021 semester, not the spring 2022 semester, but will teach again in the fall of 2022. Am I eligible for this one-time employee payment?
- Faculty who taught in the fall 2021 semester and are on suspend status in spring, but who will return to teach again in the fall 2022 semester will be eligible for the one-time payment. Your eligible pay amount will be calculated as of your 9/1/21 base annual salary. Your eligible amount and minimum will be prorated 50% (due to working only one semester). The one-time payment will be paid when you are reactivated from suspend status for the fall 2022 semester. Those who do not return from suspend status for the fall 2022 semester will not be eligible for this one-time payment.
I worked during the academic year but left Marquette before 5/1/22. Am I eligible for the one-time employee payment?
- Unless you are faculty as described in the immediately preceding example, employees who left Marquette for any reason before 5/1/22 are not eligible for the one-time payment.
Will this one-time employee payment be added to my base pay?
This one-time payment does not change your base pay.

How does this one-time employee payment affect my 403(b) retirement plan contributions and the Marquette employer match?
As a one-time payment, this is considered extra remuneration and cannot be contributed to your 403(b) account, nor is it eligible for the Marquette employer match.
How and when will this one-time employee payment be paid?
- It will be paid on Friday, May 20, 2022, by your normal payroll method. It will be noted as a miscellaneous payment on your pay slip.
- While the one-time payment amount will be taxed, no other voluntary payroll deductions will be taken (e.g., for benefits, parking, contributions, etc.).
Where is the funding for this one-time employee payment coming from?
This one-time payment will be funded from university operations. The payment will not be funded by any restricted sources, such as donor funds or Higher Education Emergency Relief Funding.
